Jonesborough, Tennessee: Discovering the Historic Charm

Jonesborough Courthouse Building

Jonesborough stands as a timeless testament to Southern charm, rich history, and community spirit. As the state's oldest town, Jonesborough boasts a storied past dating back to the late 18th century, yet it continues to captivate visitors with its quaint streets, historic landmarks, and vibrant cultural scene.

The History of Jonesborough, Tennessee

Founded in 1779, Jonesborough holds the distinction of being Tennessee's oldest town and the site of the state's first courthouse. Steeped in history, the town's streets are lined with beautifully preserved buildings, including the Chester Inn State Historic Site & Museum, the Old Jonesborough Cemetery, and the International Storytelling Center. Directly across the alley from the Chester Inn,

Andrew Jackson Cabin in Jonesborough, Tennessee

the old Christopher Taylor cabin is located which Jonesborough proudly declares was the previous residence of the 7th president of the United States, Andrew Jackson from 1788-1789. President Jackson resided there in his 20s during a short stint practicing law in Jonesborough while waiting for a caravan to take him to what is now known as Nashville. This cabin is notorious for ghost activity, some even claiming to have seen Andrew Jackson himself!

Jonesborough: A Cultural, Storytelling Hub

Jonesborough is renowned for its thriving arts and cultural scene. The town serves as the host of the National Storytelling Festival, an annual event that attracts storytellers and audiences from around the world. Visitors can also explore local art galleries, attend live performances at the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre, or stroll through the Farmers Market, where artisans showcase their crafts and culinary delights.

Nationally Recognized Downtown District

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, the heart of Jonesborough lies in its picturesque downtown district, characterized by tree-lined streets, brick sidewalks, and quaint shops housed in historic storefronts. Visitors can browse antique stores, boutique shops, and art galleries, or sample some excellent Southern food at one of the town's charming cafes and restaurants--we recently tried out the Main Street Cafe which was absolutely delicious (we highly recommend the pies).

Fun-Filled Festivals and Events for the Whole Family

Throughout the year, Jonesborough hosts a variety of festivals and events that celebrate its cultural heritage and community spirit. From the Jonesborough Days Festival, featuring live music, food vendors, and craft exhibits, to the Christmas in Olde Jonesborough celebration, with its festive

lights and holiday cheer, there's always something happening in this vibrant town. We'd also be remiss if we didn't make another mention of the Annual Storytelling Festival which is, by far, Jonesborough's largest event.

It seems like there is always something going on in downtown Jonesborough and the town provides a wonderful online calendar that highlights all of the upcoming events so you don't miss a beat.

Preserving History, Embracing the Future

As Jonesborough continues to evolve, it remains committed to preserving its historic character and small-town charm. The town's residents take pride in their heritage and actively participate in efforts to maintain Jonesborough's unique identity while embracing opportunities for growth and
